A resident of New Jersey, Marg Vail travels from Maryland to the Maine Coast. She enjoys traveling and the challenges found in nature with its variations of color and light, and in the movement or stillness of the landscape. Her focus lies in capturing time and place as she relates to the landscape. Marg sees the figure, still life and the world around her as landscapes with their planes of lights, mid-tones and darks. “There is a special pleasure searching in the open air for the beauty in nature, composing the sketch and color notes, and bringing life to the canvas.”

Education:
Marg Vail’s earliest influences were her Mother, C.M Vail, a landscape painter, and her Father, whose avocation was photography, composition and development through the printing and tinting processes. Her early work with fabric, wood and tin lead her to seek formal training at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and eventually enter the Certificate Program where she received traditional atelier-style training in painting, drawing, sculpture and printmaking her first two years. She was greatly influence by her teachers, Al Gury and Bruce Samuelson. At the Academy she developed a keen interest in working from life. Alla Prima is her preferred method of painting in oil which she carries into her latest challenge, pastel painting. Marg continues to study with National and East Coast plein air painters, more recently Kim Lordier and Stan Sperlak in pastels and Christine LaFuente in oils. Other influences on her work today are Richard Schmid and Richard McKinley. Her proximity to New York and Philadelphia open windows to vast collections in museums and galleries. Marg is 1st vice-president of the Plein Air Painters of the Jersey Coast and painting site coordinator.
